The source of this power is the voodoo religion, and its queen is Marie Laveau, the notorious voodooienne, worshipped and feared by blacks and whites alike.

ewell Parker Rhodes is a professor of American literature and creative writing at Arizona State University. The recipient of a National Endowment for the Arts Award in Fiction, she lives with her husband and two children in Scottsdale, Arizona.
